Tuesday Tip - Knot Sense

This week’s tip is a piece of equipment that is versatile, easy to use, and adds a little bit of security to your knots. We use UV Knot Sense by loon for all kinds of things around the shop and in the boat. From making quick and easy epoxy backs on flies, to a quick fix to some leaky waders, to coating a variety of knots for added security and a smoother transition through the guides on your rod.

UV Knot Sense is basically an epoxy like goo that cures instantly (or very quickly) when exposed to UV Rays.  We typically put a dab of the stuff on nail knots when adding butt sections to fly lines and over the Albright knots we use for fly line to backing connections. You can also use it on blood knots or double surgeon knots on hand tied leaders to help reduce picking up weeds and drag.  A little exposure to daylight is usually all that is needed but there are UV mini flashlights that some folks like to use as an aid for quicker curing indoors or out.

This is definitely one of those things that we never leave home without, as it’s an amazingly handy piece of equipment. This is one of those things that you don’t need until you don’t have it and then you wonder how you ever lived without it in the first place.

A couple of things to keep in mind are that it tastes bad and that the tube will cure if the lid is off for prolonged periods while being exposed to sunlight.
