Gallatin River - Fri, Jan 13th
It seems like the bugs are really enjoying the mild winter we’re having so far. People are finding midges just about everyday on the Gallatin and more often than not the fish are up on them. The river’s running clear and cool right now, so the fish are a little lethargic and pretty spooky. A simple parachute Adams is enough to bring a midging fish to the surface; although we’ve been nailing most of our fish on a midge pupa off the back of a dry or doubled up midge/small nymph combos four feet or so under an indicator. The typical Gallatin stonefly-dropper nymph rig is producing fish as well. Haven’t heard of any streamer action lately but white or light olive in a small sizes 8’s and 10’s should work well this time of year.
