Lower Madison - Wed, Sep 28th
Flows on the Lower have been stable for about a week now, which has been a nice change to fish and fishermen alike after last week’s turbulent flow changes. We’re still not sure why they pulsed the river so much last week. The cooler nights have definitely been making it feel like Autumn around here, and as a result there is lots of dead/dying floating weeds on the Lower right now. Fish are holding in the buckets right now, so dead drifting a crayfish or sculpin with a small mayfly dropper through the buckets has been the best bet. Although affective this method has been a little frustrating as of late what with the constant removal of weeds. Stripping streamers should start to produce some nicer browns, although you will find the weeds equally annoying. As soon as we get some overcast weather, which could be some time, we should start seeing some dries action on Baetis and early midges.
