Gallatin River - Fri, Jul 8th
The Gallatin is still pretty darn dirty but it’s not as darn dirty as it was a few days ago. The river is slowly coming back into shape, but it still has a ways to go. We have heard that some salmonflies have been seen up in the canyon, just not by any trout. Hopefully within a week or so we’ll see some improved visibility on the river and will be able to start thinking about fishing the river without a sense of desperation. We doubt that the salmonflies will still be around, but if we’re lucky we’ll still get to fish some golden stone dries. We just want to say again that the Gallatin will probably clear at much higher flows than most years due to the magnitude and duration of run off this year. Please be careful wading the river when it first clears. It’s still going to be huge. If you’re dieing to fish the Gallatin now, the water above Taylor’s Fork has more clarity, but it’s far from clear.
