Fishing Reports

YNP - Fri, Jun 17th

Trout Lake opened on the 15th and Bob and I went up to check it out.  The lake was off color compared to last year and we didn’t see any fish cruising the shoreline like normal.  Fishing was very slow for us, (we got skunked and saw very few anglers catch anything), but some people we spoke to said they had done well earlier in the morning on some basic stillwater nymphs like Hare’s Ears and chironomids.  We did watch one angler land a huge ‘bow out of a tube which made me feel stupid because I’ve been saying it’s not worth the effort to drag one up there when you can sight fish from the bank all day.  Since you can’t right now a tube is probably a good idea.  The very few fish we saw caught from shore were from anglers fishing as close as they legally could to the closed inlet, and so was the big ‘bow.  The inlet area will remain closed all season this year so please pay attention to the signs if you head up there.

The Firehole is still very high but we’ve actually heard some reports of rising fish in the high water.  PMD’s and caddis are both out and dry fly fishing should improve as the water drops.  Nymph and streamer fishing on the Madison in the park have also been decent.
