Gallatin River - Thu, Jan 12th
Recent warm weather was making for some really good fishing on the Gallatin. Unfortunately, there is some ice and slush that has developed over the last few cold nights. A few warmer days should help out with the ice situation. Midge larva patterns trailed behind the usual worm or rubberleg had been working just fine. Use enough weight to get nymph rigs down deep enough in the holes to put the flies in front of the fish. There has even been some good midge dry action up below Big Sky over the last few weeks. Heading up into the canyon is best bet during colder weather because the ice isn't nearly as much of an issue as it is in the slower moving water of the valley. Midge hatch activity should improve as we go later into winter.
