Don’t be surprised if you saw some people fishing in the Park without reels this week. The first Tenkara Summit was held in West Yellowstone this weekend and of course after talking about fishing many wanted to head out and enjoy the Park’s waters.
The Firehole is quite warm, especially below Midway Geyser Basin and even a mile or two up. You’re probably better off fishing it early even if you head up above the thermals. We did catch some bank feeders this weekend that were probably keyed in on all the terrestrials crawling around up there. We did find some fish rising in the morning, probably to caddis, but it wasn’t lights out. The cooler weather we have coming in later this week should improve the fishing on the Firehole, and perhaps make more of the river an option.
The Madison is also warm in the afternoons, but fish are rising to caddis in the evenings and you could probably also catch some fish on terrestrials. Please pay attention to water temperature and try to play fish quickly and efficiently if water temps are borderlines. You may also fish on tricos in the am. Water temps shouldn’t be as much of a concern for morning hatches.
