The Park has a lot of options right now. Cool evening temperatures and high water flows have kept the Firehole and Madison more fishable than most August’s. We still think you need to watch the water temps on these rivers in the afternoons. The water temps above Midway are always cooler than below on the Firehole. Expect those damn caddis mornings and evenings on both the Madison and the Firehole. Trico’s are going on the Madison in the Park, but beware the rising whitey.
All the rivers in the Lamar Valley are fishing. If you head to the Northeast corner of the Park take lots of terrestrials like beetles and ants along with the usual Chernobyl Ants and Hoppers. Fish over there do eat aquatic insects as well so have some basic mayfly and caddis imitations with you, too.
