YNP Reports
Tuesday, November 8th
Yellowstone Park is closed to fishing until Memorial Day Weekend 2012.
Thursday, November 3rd
This Sunday is the last day of the season for fishing in the park. This will be the last chance to catch a big brown on the Madison if you don’t mind the cold, snow and wind. The Firehole will have good Baetis hatches if you want to get some
Tuesday, October 11th
Brown Trout have moved up into the Madison from Hebgen Lake. Crowds of fisherman have been lined up in the more popular runs. Swinging soft hackles in riffles or nymphing deeper holes is the best shot at harassing spawning browns. Streamer fishing is only good when the weather is especially nasty and fresh fish
Saturday, October 1st
Slough Creek is low and tough right now. If you head over there you will no doubt see plenty of really nice fish that aren’t interested in eating, especially your flies. This will no doubt change as the weather cools and especially with some nice over cast weather. Soda Butte has not fished that well either.
The plus side
Monday, September 19th
We’re still waiting on the fall run fish to start eating on the Madison in the Park. We had friends that fished it pretty hard this weekend and found the fishing to be very slow. It sounds like the Firehole is a much better bet. It is now definitely an all day option with fish rising to Baetis and caddis.
Saturday, September 10th
Fishing in the Park should really start to pick up as the temperatures drop. Fall hatches should start as soon as we get the right weather (cool and overcast). There should be more fall run fish eating with the same conditions. For right now there is still some excellent terrestrial fishing to be had in pretty much all corners of the Park.
Tuesday, August 30th
Don’t be surprised if you saw some people fishing in the Park without reels this week. The first Tenkara Summit was held in West Yellowstone this weekend and of course after talking about fishing many wanted to head out and enjoy the Park’s waters.
The Firehole is quite warm, especially below Midway Geyser Basin and even a mile or
Monday, August 22nd
The Park has a lot of options right now. Cool evening temperatures and high water flows have kept the Firehole and Madison more fishable than most August’s. We still think you need to watch the water temps on these rivers in the afternoons. The water temps above Midway are always cooler than below on the Firehole. Expect those damn
Saturday, August 13th
Anglers fishing in Yellowstone National Park have a great deal of options open to them now. If we had to pick a corner we would probably head to the North East and fish Slough Creek. Expect a chance to sight fish to some larger than average cutthroat, although it won’t be easy. Have some PMD’s, midges, terrestrials, and
Thursday, August 4th
Pretty much all the rivers in the Lamar Valley are now fishing. Soda Butte and the Lamar are still higher than we’re used to seeing them this time of year, but the fishing has been good. You may want to be more prepared to nymph fish than you normally would in that corner of the Park, but you should still be
Tuesday, July 26th
We’ve actually heard the fishing has been pretty good on Slough. The river is still high but clear and the fish are eating. It’s been mostly small fish up top on caddis and grey drakes in the morning. Mid day nymphing has been producing some larger fish.
Thursday, July 21st
Sounds like Slough Creek is finally an option, although it’s still very high. Fish will eat some big dries and typical high water subsurface flies. We’re not that into going to the Park to chuck worms, but if you drove all that way and you want to catch fish it’s an option. The Lamar and Soda
Friday, July 15th
The Firehole and Madison rivers in the Park continue to fish well. The Firehole is still seeing PMD’s in the morning as well as caddis through out the day. It is getting over 70 degrees in the afternoon/evenings so you may want to restrict it to an a.m. fishery when water temps are in the mid 60’s. It
Friday, July 8th
A lot of the park water is starting to fish. The Firehole and Madison are both giving up good hatches of PMD’s and caddis. A word of warning, if you fish evening caddis on either be sure to bring the mosquito repellant. Even in town they are vicious; we saw a small child carried off by them from the
Saturday, July 2nd
The Firehole continues to be a good option if you really want to fish dries on a river. There are still PMD’s, caddis, and some midges. The flows are still pretty high; dry fly fishing should only improve. The Madison also has some of the same bugs but it’s been a little harder to find rising fish.
Saturday, June 25th
The Firehole remains quite high but has been the best bet for moving water dry fly fishing. PMD’s and caddis are still out and if you can find some soft water fish will surface feed. The Madison is high and dirty but also an option. Most of the fishing here will be subsurface with buggers, girdle bugs, and the like
Friday, June 17th
Trout Lake opened on the 15th and Bob and I went up to check it out. The lake was off color compared to last year and we didn’t see any fish cruising the shoreline like normal. Fishing was very slow for us, (we got skunked and saw very few anglers catch anything), but some people we spoke to said they had
Friday, June 10th
Most everything in the Park is high right now. The Firehole and Madison should drop enough to be fishable before too long but right now they’re not really an option. There are some excellent little stillwater options in the Park but you’ll have to do a little digging to find out about them. Be sure to check in
Friday, June 3rd
The Firehole has come up a bit in the last couple of days but still well within the range of fishable. You might need to go subsurface to have as consistent of fishing as we previously had with dries but you should still have a chance for hatch fishing until it gets really warm and even the Firehole blows out. The river will
Monday, May 30th
Dry fly fishing has been great on the Firehole. Baetis along with some pmd hatches made for lots of rising trout to cast at for most of the day on Sunday. Sparkle Dun BWO's and Blue Ribbon Cripple Baetis were both excellent flies this weekend. Caddis and pmd hatches will get stronger as the weather warms up. If the fish
Sunday, May 29th
I did get an report that fish are eating baetis on the Firehole. The Madison and Gibbon are both dirty and high, but the Firehole is in good shape with flows at 550 cfs. Be sure to bring along various dry and emerger baetis patterns if you get into a hatch. Small buggers and leeches can work well on the Firehole, and baetis
Saturday, May 28th
The park is open to fishing starting today and yes we do have fishing licenses. John is going up there tonight to fish for a few days, so look for a fresh report sometime in the coming days.
Wednesday, May 25th
We’re looking forward to the Park opener this year but a bit dubious about the fishing. The Firehole and Madison in the Park are both high and off color. If they improve or get worse is entirely dependent on the weather. Keep your fingers crossed and hope for cold evenings and less rain. We’ll give you something
Friday, May 13th
The park is still closed to fishing but it’s getting closer. May 28th is the opening day for the 2011 Yellowstone fishing season. We should be getting the license soon and we’ll be sure to let you know when we do. Although getting around might be a problem. The East entrance to the park has stayed closed so far this year due
Thursday, April 21st
Fishing in the park is still closed until May 28th, but some of the roads did open on April 15th, so if your into wildlife viewing this is a good time to do that.
Saturday, March 5th
The park is closed to fishing until Saturday May 28 (Memorial Day weekend).
