Slough Creek is low and tough right now. If you head over there you will no doubt see plenty of really nice fish that aren’t interested in eating, especially your flies. This will no doubt change as the weather cools and especially with some nice over cast weather. Soda Butte has not fished that well either.
The plus side is that for now there are still a ton of hoppers on the Lamar. They probably won’t be around much longer, but if you want to fish hoppers we suggest the Lamar. Most of the naturals are much smaller than the Lamar Valley is known to produce so stay around a size 10 in tans and dark colors. A good old black Chernobyl Ant works pretty well. Beetles and ants work great as a change up and maybe a little better on fish that are rising occasionally.
Reports from the Madison in the Park have been improving, but that will probably be better as the weather changes this week. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to head up there the first dank and overcast day we get this week. Baetis will no doubt be getting thicker as well.
