Fishing Reports

Yellowstone River - Thu, Jul 28th

We’ve talked to a couple of more people who have actually caught fish on the Yellowstone; some of them were even trout.  The river is still high and dirty, but it is “fishable” in the sense that you can go there and have a good chance of catching a fish, especially above Livingston.  Most of the fish taken have been the rare and endangered Montana Short Fin Grayling (whitefish), but a few trout have been mixed in, as well.  Most of the fish being caught, both trout and whitey’s, are on the bank.  General nymphs and streamers are working. If you can find fish they’re probably hungry.  Having said all this, we’re really not recommending you go fish the ‘Stone yet.  Flows are still high enough that only expert oarsmen should attempt to float the river, and for now the potential rewards don’t out way the risks.  We’re just saying that if you’re dieing to fish the Yellowstone, you’re a really good oarsmen, and have really good anglers; you could actually catch some fish.
