Lower Madison River Fishing Reports
Updated May 16, 24

*Flow Data: Madison River below Ennis Lake near McAllister, MT

The lower was just bumped up which could slow the fishing for a few days. This river will now be one of the better optons around Bozeman with runoff conditions starting elsewhere. Some Caddis have been flying around. Some fish eating them. A Parachute caddis or Olive Elk Hair caddis are great options when fish are rising on the lower. Those flies can work great even when an angler is not directly targeting rising fish but prospecting. If fish start to get picky a Peacock Cornfed Caddis nearly always gets the job done. Little yellow sallies have also been spotted so a yellow Chubby is a safe bet! If fish are not eating on the surface, an Olive Hot Butt soft hackle swung through rising fish might be the answer. Nymphing with Scuds, sowbugs, worms, and midges has been the most consistent way to catch fish. Worms will work well after all the recent precipitation. Sparkle Minnows, wooly buggers, mini Zirdles, and Bow River buggers are all great streamer options. Larger flies such as Mini Dragons and Gongas have started working.

Montana fishing licenses are available for purchase online at Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and at Yellow Dog Flyfishing - Fly Shop (some exceptions may apply). If you are planning to fish in the headwaters of the Gallatin River area above Taylor's Fork (approx. 1 mile upstream); be aware that most of this is in Yellowstone National Park which requires a separate fishing license and is seasonally open to fishing according to YNP regulations.
